Uhuru Radio Open Positions

Show Team Producer

Each Uhuru Radio show is prepared and conducted by a Show team. Thanks to the internet, most members of Show teams can be located anywhere in the world.

The responsibilities of a producer of an Uhuru Radio show include:

  1. Work with the Host or Show Team Leader to prepare a schedule of topics and guests for the show 1-2 months in advance.
  2. Book the guests.
  3. Research the topic and write the host's introduction and a show outline with questions.
  4. Conduct the pre-interview with the guest.
  5. Promote the shows through the Uhuru Radio website and Uhuru News weekly email, as well as via other online methods like Facebook, Indymedias, Twitter, etc.
  6. After the episode - make any necessary updates

Show Team Promoter

Each Uhuru Radio show is prepared and conducted by a Show team. Thanks to the internet, most members of Show teams can be located anywhere in the world.

A Show Promoter's responsibilities include:

  1. Post a title and description (including topic/guest if applicable) for each weekly episode of the show through the Uhuru News admin form, which will then appear on the Uhuru Radio website and weekly promo email.
  2. Find ways to reach out to an audience with a special interest in the theme of the show, through online or community networking. Whether the show focuses on music, religion or current events, there will be online groups, discussion boards, social media and news sites with readers who want to know about the show.
  3. Create printed materials such and business cards, club cards and stickers to promote your show. Distribute them to your target sectors or communities. Design help is available through Uhuru Radio's general staff.
  4. Maintain and develop your "Show Page" on Uhuru Radio, periodically updating the images and text, and making sure that the descriptions of the archive episodes are accurate. Monitor the individual episode pages for comments and respond to them.

Broadcast Engineer

Each Uhuru Radio show is prepared and conducted by a Show team. It's best for a show's broadcast engineer to live in the same locality as the host, although not absolutely necessary.

The engineer is responsible to:

  1. Operate the computer and any other audio equipment used in the weekly broadcast. Currently the minimum equipment needed for broadcast is a Mac laptop and reliable high-speed internet connection. The necessary software will be provided.

The Uhuru Radio Chief Engineer will provide technical assistance and training to all show engineers and will keep all engineers current on any software upgrades or developments related to the broadcasts.

Programmers Support Coordinator

The Programmers Support Coordinator is responsible to provide communications and technical support for Show Teams including:

  • Ensure that show descriptions are being posted to UhuruRadio.com. Provide training if needed.
  • Inform programmers about meetings, pre-emptions and station-wide announcements
  • Serve as central point person for programmers to go to for any kind of support, such as to notify about show absences or missing archives, etc.
  • Take minutes in the weekly Programmers Meetings and distribute to programmers and staff.
Skills and equipment needed to do the job:
  • Good office and communication skills. Diligent about following up on issues.
  • Access to email and phone, including long distance calls.
Time committment:
  • 1-2 hours per week in the Programmers Meeting. You can participate by conference call.
  • 2-4 hours per week communicating with programmers and Uhuru Radio's General Manager, transmitting information and facilitating training or support as needed.

Online Promotions Coordinator

The Online Promotions Coordinator reports to the Promotions Director and is responsible to get out the word about Uhuru Radio widely over the internet through such means as:

  1. Posting upcoming Show Episode descriptions or Archive audio links/clips to social media networking (Facebook, MySpace, Black Planet, Twitter, Yahoo/Google groups, Meetup groups, discussion/message boards of topic-friendly websites, etc.) and independent media outlets (Indymedias, etc.) on the web.
  2. Respond to articles in mainstream/corporate online news sites with comments that reflect the analysis of African Internationalism referencing Uhuru Radio or Uhuru News, with links to our website.
  3. Recruit a team of online promoters who can each coordinate 1 of Uhuru Radio's social media networking pages/groups and/or can forward Uhuru Radio posts to groups of which they are already a member. Provide weekly direction to the team of online promoters regarding which of the upcoming shows should be featured in online posting.
  4. Develop creative new means of internet promotions
  5. Develop a spreadsheet of which social media networks and independent media outlets are being posted to.
  6. Prepare periodic reports as requested by the Promotions Director.
  7. Monitor the Uhururadio.com site traffic reports to gauge effectiveness of the online promotions work in driving traffic to the site.

Syndication Coordinator

The Syndication Coordinator reports to the Promotions Director and is responsible to:

  1. Establish an Uhuru Radio 24/7 stream on iTunes and Live365.com
  2. Establish and maintain syndication relationships with AM, FM, Low Power FM, satelite, and Shortwave stations throughout the world.
  3. Develop a Syndications Packet, including a cover letter and sample CD set with an episode of "Omali Yeshitela Speaks", "Africa Live" and "Diasporic Music", plus several "Celebrity" Endorsement promos.
  4. Develop a list of target stations, including
    • Friends of the Movement
    • Independent community and campus-based stations in the U.S.
  5. Contact the target stations and pitch the syndication proposal. Maintain relations with stations syndicated Uhuru Radio's programming.
